Safe Streets Initiative (SSI)

The Safe Streets Initiative is Commerce City’s coordinated, long-term commitment to safer streets for everyone, whether you drive, walk, bike, or ride. It serves as the umbrella framework that ties together all of the City's transportation efforts toward the shared goal of reducing fatal and serious injury crashes by 50% by 2050.

Core planning tools, including the Transportation Master Plan and the Safety Action Plan, provide the data, priorities, and engineering strategies that guide Safe Streets investments. Operational programs such as 20 is Plenty, enhanced signage, and signal upgrades are the on-the-ground actions that implement those plans.

Public safety is also central to that work. The police department conducts targeted, data-driven enforcement in neighborhoods where dangerous driving behaviors persist. High-hazard zones carry higher fines, and tools like speed trailers and radar monitoring help hold violators accountable.

Traffic Calming Program

Provides a clear, consistent, and Data-driven process for evaluating and addressing traffic safety concerns on local and residential streets.

20 is Plenty

The “20 is Plenty” program is designed to improve safety in neighborhoods by encouraging slower driving speeds and creating safer conditions for people walking, biking, rolling, and driving throughout the community.

Traffic Signal Improvements

New signal installations, timing adjustments, equipment upgrades, and intersection enhancements designed to reduce congestion and improve operations.

Highway 2 Median Improvements

Highway 2 Corridor Improvements in Commerce City, aimed at improving traffic flow, safety, and future development along this key transportation route.

Photo Red Light & Speed Enforcement Programs

The city's photo red light and speed enforcement programs enhance traveler safety on our roadways through the use of technology, making streets safer.

Sidewalk Repair Program

Helps eligible homeowners repair or replace hazardous sidewalks adjacent to their property.

See Tracks Think Train Week is a reminder that safe streets start with all of us. Whether you’re driving, walking, or biking, take extra care when traveling near one of Commerce City’s many railroad crossings. Our Safe Streets Initiative encourages everyone to make safer choices on the road. Taking a few extra seconds to look, listen, and follow the rules can make all the difference.

Trains can be closer and move faster than they appear, and they need much more distance to stop than a vehicle. Slow down, stay alert, and follow all crossing signals to help keep yourself and others safe. Always use designated railroad crossings, obey flashing lights, bells, and crossing gates, and never stop on the tracks or drive, walk, or bike around lowered gates.
