Traffic Signal Improvements

105th and Chambers facing northeast

Project Details

The City continues to invest in roadway and traffic signal improvements to enhance safety, improve traffic flow and support growing travel demands across the community.

These projects may include new signal installations, timing adjustments, equipment upgrades and intersection enhancements designed to reduce congestion and improve overall operations. During construction, residents and motorists may experience temporary lane closures or minor delays.

We appreciate the community’s patience as we work to deliver long-term improvements that create safer, more efficient travel for everyone.

IN PROGRESS: E. 120th Avenue Widening Project Traffic Signal Infrastructure

As part of the E. 120th Avenue Widening Project, crews will install new traffic signal infrastructure on E. 120th Avenue at Chambers Road and E. Buckley Road. The work will support future roadway improvements and accommodate the widening of E. 120th Avenue.

Current Status and Impacts

Construction will occur overnight from Monday, June 15, through the morning of Friday, June 19, between 6 p.m. and 4 a.m.

At both intersections, contractors will replace existing wire-span traffic signals with new signal poles, mast arms, and signal equipment to support the future widened roadway.

  • Monday, June 15: Crews will work at the intersection of E. 120th Avenue and Chambers Road. Work is expected to be completed early Tuesday, June 16, in the morning.
  • Tuesday, June 16, through the morning of Friday, June 19: Crews will work at the intersection of E. 120th Avenue and Buckley Road during overnight hours.

What to expect:

  • Brief closures will occur
  • Traffic control operations during construction.
  • Flaggers will be on site to temporarily stop traffic as the wire is hoisted into place.

IN PROGRESS: E. 88th Avenue Widening Project Traffic Signal Infrastructure

East 88th Ave from I 76 to HWY 2 we have a total of four traffic signal and two Railroad crossings.

  • Brighton Road & E. 88th Avenue: Pedestrian crossing improvements will be added to help people cross the intersection more safely.
  • Mile High Flea Market Entrance: A new dynamic traffic signal will improve traffic flow by allowing eastbound drivers to make U-turns or, when needed, providing two left-turn lanes into the Mile High Flea Market.
  • Union Pacific Railroad Crossing (west of Rosemary Street): The railroad crossing will be expanded from two lanes to four lanes and will include new sidewalks on both sides of the roadway for pedestrians.
  • Rosemary Street & E. 88th Avenue: The traffic signal will be replaced as the intersection is widened from two lanes to four lanes. New pedestrian crosswalks will also be added.
  • BNSF Railway Railroad Crossing (west of Highway 2): Safety improvements will be made to the railroad crossing to enhance travel for both drivers and pedestrians.
  • E. 88th Avenue & Highway 2: The traffic signal will be upgraded with pedestrian safety improvements, making it easier to cross Highway 2 and better connect to the sidewalks and bike paths on the east side of the highway.

IN PROGRESS: E. 96th Widening Project Traffic Signal Infrastructure

As a part of the E. 96th Avenue Widening Project there is a total of 5 intersections with new signals or modified signals

  • Chambers Road & E. 96th Avenue: The existing traffic signal has been replaced as part of the roadway improvements. The new signal became operational in late June 2026.
  • Laredo Street & E. 96th Avenue: A new traffic signal and pedestrian crossing are being added to improve access to the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge perimeter trail. The signal is expected to become operational in spring 2027.
  • Landmark Drive & E. 96th Avenue: A new traffic signal is being installed to improve access and traffic flow. The signal is expected to become operational in October 2026.
  • Reunion Parkway/Telluride Street & E. 96th Avenue: The existing traffic signal is being replaced to support the widened roadway. The new signal is expected to become operational in October 2026.

  • Bidding period through the month of March

What to expect:

  • All updates will be updated on this page

COMPLETED: Chambers Road and 105th Avenue

Project Timeline

  • Public meeting: March 5, 2025, from 6 – 7:30 p.m. at Bison Ridge Recreation Center during design.
  • Install at Chambers Road at E. 105th Avenue is scheduled to begin in mid-January 2026. Anticipated to be completed by the end of April 2026, weather permitting.
  • Additional traffic signals on the Chambers corridor are scheduled to begin construction in Q1 of 2026.
    • 117th Avenue.
    • Heartland Drive.

Current Status and Impacts

  • COMPLETED: The new traffic signal will be activated the week of Feb. 16, during the middle of the week. Drivers should be prepared for the signal to be operational and use caution as they travel through the intersection.

  • COMPLETED: As part of the new traffic signal installation at Chambers Road and 105th Avenue, crews will be installing a span wire (stringing wire from pole to pole across the roadway) during the week of Feb. 2.

What to expect:

  • Periodic, brief closures of Chambers Road at 105th Avenue will occur Monday through Friday during this work.
  • Flaggers will be on site to temporarily stop traffic as the wire is hoisted into place.
  • Each closure is expected to last less than five minutes.
  • Construction at Chambers Road and E. 105th Avenue began Jan. 13. Crews started by potholing the signal pole locations to a depth of 10 feet. Caissons were then drilled to full depth (approximately 20 feet). Signal poles will be set in concrete in the days to follow. Favorable weather helped crews make strong early progress.

  • Nearby businesses will remain accessible through alternate entrances during construction. Motorists should expect periodic lane closures, traffic control, and temporary access restrictions to the shopping centers on both the east and west sides of Chambers Road.
