Highway 2 Median Improvements

Highway 2 Median Redesign Map

Commerce City is redesigning and constructing medians on Highway 2 between E. 96th Avenue and E. 104th Avenue, spanning approximately one and a half miles. The project includes safety features such as raised medians and barriers to help reduce the risk of head-on crashes and improve overall roadway safety.

Project Goals

  • The median design will improve mobility and enhance safety on the corridor for motorists.
  • Enhance driver awareness and safety by installing rumble strips and roadway striping.

Public Input Opportunities

There are currently no upcoming public input meetings or ongoing surveys at this time. Please see below and check back on this page for future updates.

Project Timeline

Below are a few highlights of what to expect throughout the duration of the project:

Current Status and Impacts

  • Work will begin to improve the medians along Highway 2 north of East 96th Avenue. Work is expected to begin Feb. 2026 with mobilization, traffic control, and erosion control setup. If additional funding is approved, median improvements may extend farther north toward Turnberry Parkway and Highway 2.
    • A reduced speed limit from 45 mph to 35 mph will be in effect through the construction zone, from East 96th Avenue north to Turnberry Parkway.
  • One lane in each direction will remain open to traffic at all times during construction zone.
  • All access will be maintained., turn lanes at intersections will remain open to motorists.
  • The Highway 2 Median Improvements are project is expected to be completed by Summer 2026.

Highway 2 Corridor Study

This corridor study established a unified vision for Highway 2, identify needed multimodal improvements to achieve that vision, and position Commerce City to move seamlessly into the design and implementation of a safer, more functional corridor.

The project team collaborated with the Highway 2 Median Improvement project to ensure that outreach efforts and corridor recommendations are aligned and meet the needs of the community that lives, works, and travels Highway 2.

Study Goals

The study identified areas in need of transformative change along the Highway 2 corridor, which is the only direct link between the northeast and southwest portions of the City. Enhancing safety, improving accommodations for people using active modes, and improving character or aesthetic appeal are all key desired outcomes. The study built from past foundational work to assess the feasibility and appropriateness of various multimodal improvement concepts for achieving them.
