Co-Responder Unit

The Commerce City Police Department Co-Responder Unit (CRU) is a specialized unit consisting of behavioral health clinicians and a case manager who will work with Crisis Intervention Team (CIT)-trained officers. The Co-Responder Unit responds to 911 calls for service, wherein encountering a person in a mental health crisis is probable. On scene, CRU members apply specialized skills to provide triage and assessment, de-escalate crisis conditions, and potentially divert individuals with behavioral health conditions from the criminal justice system and/ or emergency room.

This redirection improves outcomes by utilizing suitable treatment destinations. The goal of the program is to produce a dynamic, flexible response model for mental health crisis calls that brings the most appropriate resources sooner, identifies predominant issues quickly, and better ensures that the individual is taken to the appropriate resource destination sooner. The unit is dedicated to building relationships with participants while working to help people improve their quality of life.
