Emergency Preparedness and Management

Disaster preparedness is a shared responsibility of all city departments, our residents, our business community and our service and faith-based organizations. Community preparedness and resilience depends on everyone doing their part to be aware of our potential hazards and being mentally prepared to quickly implement their shelter-in-place or evacuation plan. Being aware, building a kit and having a plan can help you, your family and our community be ready to respond to and recovery from any natural or human caused disaster.

Emergency Management

The Office of Emergency Management (OEM), a division within the Police Department, is responsible for the city’s emergency management, overseeing day-to-day non-emergency operations and emergency operations during a disaster or crises.

The city also has a Mobile Command Center (MCC) vehicle designed to respond to and support public safety operations.

Our Mission

To build the best defenses for our community by partnering with public and private organizations to protect lives and infrastructure by mitigating risks, preparing for disasters, responding to emergencies with fortitude, and recovering from any crises with resilience.

Commerce City OEM operates in conjunction with the Commerce City Police Department with the mutual goal to provide a safe community for in which the public can thrive. While we take steps daily to prevent disasters from causing senseless damage or from unfolding altogether, there are always uncertainties. It is our hope that through providing information, education, and working with the public, we can reduce lives lost and increase the opportunities for resilience. We want to make sure that you have all the resources available so that you may prepare yourself, your home, and your family from the varying dangers that exist and understand what actions you can take before responders arrive.

Amateur Radio

Commerce City OEM partners with Adams-Arapahoe County Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ACARES/ARES) to establish an auxiliary communications network, planning for situations in which traditional means of communication are compromised. If you are interested in getting involved in amateur radio, please fill out a Volunteer Application Form.
