Photo Red Light & Speed Enforcement Programs
The city's photo red light and speed enforcement programs enhance traveler safety on our roadways through the use of technology. A photo red light system is currently in place at the intersection of E. 60th Avenue and U.S. 85 - one of the most dangerous intersections in the city. A photo speed enforcement vehicle moves throughout the city.
How does the system work?
A red light violation occurs when a motorist enters an intersection after a traffic signal has turned red. There are signs posted near the intersection to advise drivers that they are approaching a photo red light device. The system digitally captures a picture of the vehicle prior to and during the violation, a picture of the license plate and a photograph of the driver's face. These images are electronically transmitted to the police department to review and confirm that a violation occurred.
An automated speed violation occurs when a motors drives past the speed enforcement vehicle over a designated speed. The speed limits are clearly posted and signs for the speed enforcement camera being in use are also clearly posted prior to the vehicles location. The system is internally calibrated prior to and after every deployment. The system captures pictures and videos of the vehicle as the vehicle drives by, this capture only occurs when there is a violation. If there is no violation there is no photo captured. The system captures photos of the license plate and the drivers face. This data is electronically transmitted for review prior to the issuance of a violation. Once the police department confirms the violation then it is sent to the owner of the vehicle.
Notice and Fees
The registered owner of the vehicle receives a mailed notice of violation and the assessment of a $75 fine for a red light violation and a $40 fine for a speed related violation.
