MyC3 - Residential Yard of the Month Program

The new Yard of the Month program is meant to build community pride while recognizing neighbors who demonstrate above-average efforts to maintain their property and improve the overall appearance of our community. We hope you'll nominate someone in your neighborhood!

Details

The program runs from May 1 through August 30 each year (the last winners will be recognized in September). All residential properties within Commerce City are eligible to win, but can only win once in a calendar year. Residents can nominate their own yard or another resident’s yard. There will be one winner per ward (four winners total) every month during the program duration. Winners will receive a gift card and public recognition.

Eligibility Criteria

Criteria

  • Only the portion of the yard viewed from the street will be considered, including the front and side yards.
  • Tasteful landscaping the yard is attractive and well groomed (e.g., well-kept edged and defined lawn, walkways, and driveway, a variety of plants, shrubs, ground cover, water-wise, boarders, pavers, rocks, ground cover, flowers, wildflowers, plants with a variety of heights, textures and colors; landscape features such as fountains, large rocks in beds, etc.)
  • Buildings, fences, porches, patio, and parking area are in good repair
  • Tree lawn and/or right-of-way meet the same standards as the yard
  • Free of litter, junk, debris, and outdoor storage
  • Trees and shrubs are manicured and pruned
  • House numbers are visible and attractively displayed
  • All residential properties within the city limits are automatically eligible
  • If no nominations are received by the public, the committee will nominate and select the winner(s)
  • Four winners will be selected each month - one winner per ward

Judging Categories

Lawns

Grass should be healthy with no bare spots or excessive weeds. Grass shall be mowed and edged and trimmed around foundations and fences. A unified, simple, and balanced landscape design with a neat and natural appearance.

Landscape & Flower Beds

Beds shall be weeded and edged, flowers must be deadheaded and dead plants removed, trees and shrubs pruned, and natural areas cleaned. Beautification efforts should include new flowers, trees, shrubs, etc., with plantings in scale with the surroundings.

Walkways & Driveways

Walkways and driveways shall be clean (including trash containers or yard products removed from view). The area in front of the curb must be free from debris and dirt.

Aesthetics

The overall landscaping look (formal versus informal, use of color and textures, garden art) is essential. The front entryway should be inviting, with original and creative touches to show personality (hanging baskets, pots, yard art, bird feeders, etc.)

Nomination Periods

The date of your submission may carry over into the next month's list of nominations, but please expect the date of your submission to reflect what month you are nominating someone for.

  • June: Monday, May 6 – Friday, May 24
  • July: Monday, June 3 – Friday, June 21
  • August: Monday, July 1 – Friday, July 26
  • September: Monday, Aug. 5 – Friday, Aug. 30
  • October: Monday, Sept. 2 – Friday, Sept. 27

Non-eligible Properties

Residents are not eligible to win if any of the following is true regarding the nominated property address:

  • Is in violation of any city ordinance
  • Is currently for sale or rent
  • Was already recognized and awarded within the same calendar year
  • Not willing to have photos of the yard published online at the city's discretion
