Original story below:
has announced that a strong wind event forecast on Wednesday, Dec. 17, could impact parts of Commerce City and may result in a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS). Areas shown within the dotted lines on the could be affected if power is temporarily turned off to reduce wildfire risk.
Due to very dry conditions and a recent stretch of near-record warm temperatures, Xcel Energy Colorado is closely monitoring the situation. These conditions increase the potential for critical wildfire weather if high winds occur. As a precaution, Xcel is currently evaluating the possible need for a PSPS beginning around noon on Wednesday.
Public Safety Power Shutoffs and Enhanced Powerline Safety Settings (EPSS) are tools Xcel Energy uses to help prevent wildfires and protect public safety. EPSS allows power lines to remain energized during elevated wildfire risk while applying additional safety protections. In contrast, a PSPS involves proactively shutting off power when weather conditions create a higher wildfire threat.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed and prepared.
