Juneteenth Celebration Event
Juneteenth Independence Day, most commonly referred to as Juneteenth, is a federal holiday in the United States recognizing the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. Although President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, it was not until two years later, on June 19, 1865, that residents of Galveston, Texas were freed following the arrival of Union troops. Juneteenth is recognized as a day to celebrate the end of slavery and to honor the culture and achievements of Black Americans.
This year, Commerce City’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee is proud to recognize Juneteenth and celebrate the contributions of African Americans to our community with two public events:
Juneteenth Raising of the Flag
Monday, June 15 at 4:30 p.m., Commerce City Civic Center, 7887 E. 60th Ave.
The ceremony will feature remarks from city officials and a performance of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” as the city raises the official Juneteenth flag in front of the Civic Center.
