Frequently Asked Questions
What do I do if online incident reporting is not right for me?
If your incident is an emergency, call 911. If not, please call the non-emergency dispatch line at 303-288-1535.
Where can I report my car crash online?
CCPD does not currently accept crash reports online. Crash reports can be reported to the Colorado Department of Revenue at dmv.colorado.gov/report-accident. Please note that crashes reported to the Colorado DOR are for informational purposes only. There will be no officer follow up conducted on a report submitted in this manner.
If the crash involved more than $2000 in damage to vehicles, was a hit and run, or resulted in more than a minor injury, please contact dispatch at 303-288-1535 to have an officer dispatched to take your report.
When will I be contacted by an officer or detective after submitting my report?
The timing of follow up from CCPD personnel will depend on the type of report and information submitted, and the department's case load at the time.
Reports including actionable information may be forwarded to officers or detectives for follow up. For cases without actionable details, you may only be contacted to confirm receipt of your report and to update you on the status of your case, which may be closed immediately and the online report retained for record keeping purposes.
When will the person who committed the crime be arrested?
Unless very specific evidence or other actionable details are submitted, online reports will typically not result in a suspect being identified or apprehended in the crime.
If you have suspect information or know who committed the crime, please contact non-emergency dispatch at 303-288-1535 to have an officer dispatched to take your report.
If a crime is in progress or the suspect is still in the area, call 911 immediately.
If this happened in another city, can I file a report using the CCPD online system?
No, if a crime took place outside of Commerce City, please contact the police department or sheriff's office for the jurisdiction where the crime occurred.
What if this happened on a state freeway?
If the crime took place on a state freeway, please contact the Colorado State Patrol office nearest you. Visit csp.colorado.gov for more information.
What is a known suspect?
A "known suspect" is considered to be when you or someone else knows the person or where to find the person who committed the crime or the license plate number of the vehicle the suspect(s) were in.
I lost my copy of the report I submitted. How can I obtain a new one?
All online reports are entered into CCPD’s records management system. You can obtain a copy by walking into the police department. You will be required to show identification, fill out the records request form, and pay $10. Alternatively, you can request a copy of the report through the city's online records request portal. If requested online, you will be notified when the document is prepared. The cost is still $10.
What if the crime I want to report isn’t listed?
Please contact non-emergency dispatch at 303-288-1535 to have an officer dispatched to take your report.
