COMMERCE CITY, CO. (July 2, 2026): Commerce City Police Department Detective Yailyn Cazares is seeking justice for 40-year-old Emilio Fernandez, and she is asking for the public’s help to do that. Fernandez was shot and killed in his own driveway in the 5400 block of Leyden Street while attempting to defend his brother on July 25, 2022, just after 2 a.m.

Fernandez’s brother had just returned home and exited his vehicle to move trash cans blocking the driveway, when three men pulled up in a 2004-2008 Acura TL.  Two of the suspects got out of the vehicle and robbed Fernandez’s brother at gunpoint. Fernandez rushed outside to come to his brother’s aid and was shot to death by one of the suspects.  The gunman then fled in the Acura, and his accomplice stole Fernandez’s brother’s truck, which was later recovered in Thornton.

Fernandez’s brother described the gunman as being approximately 5-foot-6, 220 pounds, and having a full connecting beard.  He described the other suspect as being taller in stature with faded curly hair.

“If anyone knows any information about this case, please call our tip line at 303-289-3626,” Detective Cazares explains. “It would be greatly appreciated—not only for us, but most importantly for the family who deserves justice and closure.”
