Two Killed in Car Crash, Child Remains in Critical Condition
Published on September 18, 2023
COMMERCE CITY, CO, Sept. 18, 2023: The Commerce City Police Department (CCPD) is continuing to investigate a fatal collision that occurred just before 11:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15, at Highway 2 and Ea. 72nd Avenue.
Originally we reported that a 56-year-old female was deceased at the scene and a 38-year-old female died later at the hospital. That information is incorrect; the 38-year-old woman was driving and died immediately, and her 56-year-old passenger—a friend—passed away in the hospital. A 9-year-old boy—the son of the driver who was killed—remains in critical condition.
The crash occurred when the vehicle those three individuals were in made a left-hand turn off Highway 2 onto East 72nd Avenue and was struck by another vehicle traveling southbound on Highway 2. The driver of that vehicle—a 17-year-old boy—was seriously injured and is still hospitalized.
Our traffic team is continuing to investigate the violent crash and whether a high rate of speed played a factor in causing it. They will determine what/if any charges are appropriate.
