The Commerce City Police Department has launched a new Co-Responder Unit (CRU) designed to better support individuals experiencing a mental health crisis in our community.

The CRU pairs behavioral health clinicians and a case manager with specially trained Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) officers. Together, they respond to 911 calls where a mental health crisis may be involved. On scene, the team provides immediate triage and assessment, de-escalates crisis situations, and connects individuals with the most appropriate care.

By diverting people from the criminal justice system or emergency room when appropriate, the CRU helps ensure that those in crisis receive timely access to treatment and resources that best meet their needs. The program’s goal is to build a flexible response model that addresses issues quickly, improves outcomes, and strengthens relationships with participants to support long-term quality of life.
