Man Arrested for Knife Attack, Forcibly Kidnapping his
Child and Fleeing From Police

COMMERCE CITY, CO, December 13th, 2026: The Commerce City Police Department is recommending a slew of charges against a man who forcibly kidnapped his nine-year-old son after breaking into a home and attacking a resident there with a knife.

CCPD was called to a disturbance January 12th in the 10700 block of Wheeling Drive.  We learned 27-year-old Oswaldo Ruiz had been threatening to harm his ex-partner and other members of her household via text for several days.  The situation escalated when Ruiz kicked in the front door of the residence, attacked a family member with a knife (his injuries were fortunately not life-threatening), then broke through a second door to a bedroom and kidnapped his nine-year-old son.  Before fleeing the house, Ruiz took the car keys to the vehicles there so he could not be followed.

Adams County Sheriff’s deputies located Ruiz at his own residence in the county, and when they attempted to contact him, he fled with the child in a vehicle.  Deputies pursued Ruiz into Denver, where they successfully took him into custody and recovered the boy unharmed.  Our officers then quickly reunited the child with his mother.

Ruiz was jailed on eight recommended charges: First Degree Burglary, Aggravated Second Degree Assault With a Weapon, Child Abuse Knowingly or Recklessly, First Degree Kidnapping—Force, Eluding a Police Officer, Domestic Violence, Theft, and Criminal Mischief.

We appreciate the partnership with the Adams County Sheriff’s Office that led to the quick apprehension of this dangerous individual and the safe return of the child.
