We’re just too excited and we can’t wait to share this with you all. The construction fences are officially down at CALU Park!

Commerce City is getting ready to welcome a vibrant new outdoor space! CALU Park, a two-acre pocket park nestled between the Buffalo Highlands neighborhood and the Rocky Mountain Arsenal Wildlife Refuge, is nearing completion on the south side of E. 96th Avenue. The plumbed restroom, shade structures, and public art have yet to be installed, but otherwise, the park itself is now available for use by community members.

Officially named by City Council in October 2024, CALU honors the Cheyenne, Arapaho, Lakota, and Ute tribes, the Indigenous peoples who originally inhabited this land. Previously known as "Oasis Park" during early planning, the new name reflects a deeper connection to the region’s cultural roots.

The park features:

• A playground for all ages
• An overlook plaza with an embankment slide
• A plumbed restroom and picnic area with trellises
• An open lawn for recreation and relaxation
• An educational garden with native plants
• Direct access to the Second Creek Trail
• Interpretive signage and public art honoring the four Indigenous tribes recognized in the park’s name

One of the park’s most anticipated features is a stunning mosaic by artist Marco Antonio Garcia. The artwork celebrates Indigenous heritage with a central sunburst motif, braided grass symbolizing unity, and tribal symbols representing each nation. The 7-foot circular design reflects wholeness and the shared connection to the land.

Interpretive signage and artwork installation are expected later this year, weather permitting. An official opening celebration is planned for next spring, in time for warmer weather and playful afternoons on the new playground.

Stay tuned for more updates as we get ready to celebrate this meaningful addition to our community!
