CCPD Launches Mobile Speed Cameras to Improve Neighborhood Safety
Published on January 30, 2026
The Commerce City Police Department (CCPD) is introducing new Mobile Speed Cameras as part of its ongoing efforts to address community concerns about speeding and aggressive driving, particularly in residential neighborhoods and school zones.
Over the past several months, residents have shared concerns about drivers traveling well above posted speed limits and the impact this behavior has on safety. In response, CCPD has acquired a mobile speed enforcement vehicle designed to help reduce dangerous driving and improve overall traffic safety. The program will launch in March 2026, with a 30-day warning period before the enforcement phase begins, and citations will be issued for qualifying violations in April 2026.
CCPD will rely on resident input to determine where the speed van is deployed. Initially, the van will be stationed in residential neighborhoods, with a priority focus on streets located within school zones. Residents who believe their neighborhood would benefit from this type of speed enforcement are encouraged to contact CCPD’s traffic unit at trafficcomplaints@c3gov.com.
What is the Mobile Speed Camera?
The mobile speed camera is an unmanned vehicle equipped with radar and high-resolution cameras. When a vehicle is detected traveling significantly over the posted speed limit, the system captures images and data related to the violation. All potential violations are reviewed by CCPD’s traffic enforcement team before any citation is issued. This approach allows officers to focus enforcement efforts on areas where speeding poses the greatest risk, while ensuring each case is carefully evaluated.
How the Mobile Speed Cameras works
Mobile speed cameras are used nationwide to increase pedestrian safety and improve traffic flow. The CCPD mobile speed enforcement system operates as follows:
- The system activates when a vehicle is detected traveling over the posted speed limit.
- An image of the front of the vehicle is captured to help identify the driver.
- An image of the rear of the vehicle is captured to identify the license plate.
- Additional data is collected, including time, date, posted speed, vehicle speed, location, lane, and direction of travel.
- CCPD officers review all images and data to determine whether issuing a violation notice is appropriate.
