New xeric demonstration gardens are ready to inspire residents

Commerce City is celebrating the completion of two new xeric demonstration gardens designed to show residents how water-wise landscaping can look in their own yards. The two gardens are located on opposite ends of the city boundaries, one at Monaco Park (5790 Monaco St.) and the other at Bison Ridge Recreation Center (13905 E. 112th Ave.).

The gardens were made possible through grant funding, including a $10,000 Colorado Growing Water Smart grant received by the city from The Sonoran Institute and the Babbitt Center for Land and Water Policy. Additional grant funding from the Colorado Water Conservation Board (CWCB) and the Colorado Department of Public Health and the Environment’s (CDPHE) Supplemental Environmental Projects (SEP) fund helped support the completion of the project, meaning the gardens were created without using local tax dollars. The demonstration gardens were developed in partnership with the city and South Adams County Water and Sanitation District (SACWSD) as a way to give residents a real-life example of xeric landscaping. Rather than simply looking at a landscaping plan, residents can see how different plants, materials, and design elements can come together in a finished garden.  Water-wise landscaping can help reduce outdoor water use and, depending on the design and plants selected, may also help homeowners save money on ongoing water and landscape maintenance costs.

Now that they are complete, residents are invited to join the city for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the completed project and learn more about xeriscaping.

Ribbon-cutting ceremony

  • Wednesday, Oct. 14

  • 10:30 – 11:30 a.m.
