Commerce City secures $300,000 grant for wildfire risk mitigation
Published on August 18, 2025
Commerce City’s Office of Emergency Management (OEM) is proud to announce it has been awarded a $300,000 grant through the Natural Disaster Mitigation Enterprise Grant Program. This funding will support critical efforts to prevent wildfires, like the devastating Marshall Fire, from spreading from grasslands into residential neighborhoods.
The initiative is already underway, with crews actively clearing dead brush and pruning trees along Sand Creek to reduce fire hazards. Starting the week of Aug. 18, an additional project will remove about 150 dead or dying trees along Highway 2 over the course of one week. This work will not only enhance community safety but also improve the aesthetic appeal of the area. From October through April 2026, that focus will shift to Second Creek Open Space, where further wildfire mitigation efforts will take place to strengthen the city’s defenses against potential fire risks.
Commerce City remains committed to fostering a safe and resilient community through strategic wildfire prevention efforts.
