Construction activity has recently begun at Bison Ridge Recreation Center (13905 E. 112th Ave.) and Monaco Park (5790 Monaco St.), as the city is creating grant-funded new xeriscape demonstration gardens at both locations to give residents a chance to see water-wise landscaping in action. These gardens are designed to be more than attractive public spaces; they will be outdoor examples of how thoughtful landscape design can help conserve water while creating beautiful, functional gardens that are well-suited to our local environment.
Xeriscaping is a landscaping approach that emphasizes water conservation through thoughtful design, plant selection, and efficient use of resources. A xeriscape garden can include drought-tolerant plants, efficient irrigation, appropriate soil preparation, mulch, and other landscaping features that help reduce the amount of water needed to maintain a healthy landscape. Xeriscaping is about choosing the right plants and landscaping practices for the environment.
As construction progresses, residents will see crews preparing the sites and installing features such as irrigation, pavers, soil, plants, sod, fencing and mulch. Once the gardens are complete, educational signage will help explain what residents are seeing, including the landscaping approaches and plants used in the demonstration gardens. The idea is to make these spaces something residents can reference when considering changes to their own yards.
Once construction is complete, the city will share more information about the gardens, including the plants and landscaping techniques used. Work at the Bison Ridge Recreation Center is expected to be substantially complete by late September, with the garden anticipated to be finished around the beginning of October. Meanwhile, work at Monaco Park is expected to be complete by mid-October, a week later.
