Welcome the New Director of Community Development, Mike Sutherland

Commerce City leadership is pleased to announce the appointment of Mike Sutherland, AICP, as the city’s new Director of Community Development, effective Oct. 13.

Mike, who has been serving as Deputy Director and Interim Director, is a certified professional planner with 30 years of experience in community development, development review, and complex project management across the Front Range. He holds a master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning and Public Administration from the University of Colorado.

He brings extensive experience leading multidisciplinary teams, overseeing multimillion-dollar budgets, and guiding long-range planning and code modernization efforts throughout the region.

Mike shared that he is very proud and appreciative to continue supporting community development in Commerce City and to be part of the C3 team. His appointment is an important step in advancing the city’s strategic vision, strengthening infrastructure, managing growth responsibly, and fostering organizational excellence. His leadership and collaborative approach will help the city deliver sustainable development that enhances the quality of life for residents, businesses, and employees.
