Scattered Garbage and Trash

Trash should be stored in a designated garbage can or proper receptacle until collection, not scattered across your property.

Republic Services is the citywide hauler for Commerce City's residential trash and recycling program. Trash and recycling services are provided to Commerce City residents at no additional cost for all single-family homes and duplexes in the city (service varies for other housing types). However, as a resident, trash cans should not be left at the curb for more than 24 hours after pick up.

Items that cannot fit inside your trash cart can be collected once per quarter at no extra charge. To find out if your item meets the size and weight requirements or to schedule, call Republic Services at 303.286.1200 (M-F, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.) This pickup must be scheduled with Republic Services. You can schedule additional bulk item pickups any time for only $15 per item. Learn more about the program and events at our Trash & Recycling page.

Sec. 6-2003. - Garbage and trash

  1. Removal. The owner or occupant of any property located within the city shall provide for the removal of all trash, garbage or waste of any kind from the property at regular intervals. Such intervals shall be as often as necessary to prevent the creation of a public heath nuisance, but in no event shall the interval between collections exceed thirty (30) days. Between collections, all trash, garbage and waste shall be securely stored in watertight, corrosive-resistant containers with tight-fitting lids.
  2. Trash container storage. Except to facilitate collection, trash containers in residential districts shall be placed behind a privacy fence, in a garage or other completely enclosed building or otherwise fully screened from public view by landscaping or a dumpster enclosure. Trash containers/dumpsters in commercial districts shall be screened by a dumpster enclosure or as stipulated on a site plan. Containers in residential areas shall be placed at the curb on the morning of or evening before the scheduled collection and shall be removed from the curb and returned to an appropriate storage area not more than twenty-four (24) hours after collection.
  3. Improper dumping. It shall be unlawful for any person to put, place or dump garbage, trash, or waste of any kind on the property of another, including in, on, under or around the trash container of another; provided, however, that a person may place garbage, trash or waste in the trash container of another when written permission for such use is granted by the owner or occupant of the property on which the trash container is located. This section shall not apply to persons disposing of waste in containers placed in public locations for use by the public, except that no person shall dispose of unreasonable amounts of trash, garbage or waste in such public containers unless the container is specifically marked to accept such disposal.
  4. Garbage chutes. It shall be unlawful to construct or maintain any garbage chute in the city unless the chute is constructed of metal and is kept clean and free from odors at all times.
