Celebrate the season sustainably
Published on December 10, 2025
No matter which holidays you celebrate, small choices can make a positive environmental impact. Throughout the month, consider choosing small actions that help reduce waste and support our local community. Sending digital invitations to gatherings can cut down on paper use and make planning easier. Shopping locally or from small businesses helps reduce shipping emissions while strengthening our local economy. And when it comes to wrapping gifts, choosing recyclable paper, plain kraft paper, or reusable gift bags can reduce waste and keep materials in use for years to come. Try incorporating some of these sustainable ideas for each holiday throughout the month.
Christmas
- For your Christmas tree, consider renting a living tree or purchasing a real tree from a local grower and recycling it at the end of the season. (Fun fact: An artificial tree would need to be used for about 20 years to match
the environmental impact of one real tree.)
- Choose LED string lights and use timers to reduce energy use during evening and overnight hours.
Hanukkah
- Select wooden dreidels instead of plastic ones and consider choosing vegan gelt for a lower-impact holiday treat.
- When preparing meals, try incorporating more plant-forward dishes and purchasing produce from local farmers when available.
Kwanzaa
- Choose candles made from soy, beeswax, or coconut wax for your kinara to avoid petroleum-based alternatives.
- Consider selecting a locally crafted kinara or woven mat to support artisans and reduce shipping impact.
New Year’s Celebration
- Reuse decorations from previous years or select biodegradable or secondhand décor instead of purchasing new single-use items.
- When hosting gatherings, use washable plates and utensils, or choose compostable options if reusable dishware is not feasible.
