Residents asked to stay alert for copper wire thefts

The Commerce City Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division (CID) is urging residents and businesses to remain vigilant following a recent surge in copper wire thefts across the community.
In September alone, officers responded to seven separate incidents of stolen or cut copper wiring, nearly double the average number typically reported in a month. The thefts have occurred in a variety of locations, including commercial businesses, residential neighborhoods, and along city streets.
“These criminals are targeting everything from lamp posts and light fixtures along highways to backflow preventers and spools of copper wiring stored on business properties,” said CID investigators. “In some cases, suspects have even driven vehicles through locked gates or cut through security fencing to access materials.”
The thefts are not only costly to property owners but also create potential safety hazards when critical infrastructure is damaged. While Commerce City police have made arrests in connection with these crimes, investigators stress that continued community awareness and reporting are key to holding all offenders accountable.
Police are asking residents and business owners to:
- Stay alert for suspicious activity, especially around closed businesses, dark areas, or utility equipment.
- Report individuals loitering, hiding, or acting abnormally near commercial properties or public infrastructure.
Always dial 911 in the event of an emergency or to report a crime in progress. Otherwise, call the Commerce City Police Department’s non-emergency dispatch line at 303-288-1535 to report suspicious activity.
