Other Roads Projects
Capital Improvements Projects are one-time projects that generally consist of building improvements in excess of $100,000 or public infrastructure improvements in excess of $10,000. More than $1 billion in improvements ranging from parks to roads have been identified over the next 25 years to meet the needs of a growing community. These projects are approved by city council each year and typically funded separate from the general fund.

About the Project
In addition to widening Tower Road to four lanes between E. 80th and E. 103rd avenues, the city is working on a separate project to construct a new ramp from Tower Road onto westbound Pena Boulevard; a feature that does not currently exist. Since this area is located outside the city border, Commerce City is working with the City of Denver and Denver International Airport. The City of Denver will complete the widening of Tower Road from the city border at E. 80th Avenue south to the eastbound Pena Boulevard ramps.

Construction on the Pena Boulevard ramp and widening of the Denver portion of Tower Road are scheduled to occur at the same time. Plans are currently being developed with a goal of starting construction in the spring or summer of 2017.

RTD Station Area Improvements
About the Project
Commuter rail service is coming to the city in 2018 with construction of the Commerce City – 72nd Avenue station along RTD’s North Metro Rail Line (N Line). To accommodate more vehicle traffic and improve pedestrian access around the station, the city is improving area streets using grant money obtained from the Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG). Colorado Boulevard will be repaved between E. 70th and E. 72nd avenues and new sidewalks and curbs will be added. An extension of E. 72nd Avenue will be built west of Colorado Blvd. to access the new station.

96th Avenue Extension (Complete)
About the Project
Completed in May 2015, this project constructed a new roadway extending E. 96th Avenue past Buckley Road to connect with Tower Road. New features include a bridge over Second Creek and a traffic signal at the intersection of E. 96th Avenue and Tower Road.

The extension completes another east-west thoroughfare across the city and is instrumental for Buffalo Highlands, a master-planned community to be located at E. 96th Avenue and Buckley Road. The new road has the capability of being widened to four lanes in the future.

Wayside Horn (Complete)
About the Project
This project installed a digital wayside horn system at the railroad crossing at Highway 2 and E. 96th Avenue to reduce train horn noise for nearby residents. The project was completed in January 2014.
