----------------

On May 7, Suncor personnel observed a sheen in a section of Sand Creek near our Commerce City refinery. Since that time we have been working in the area to ensure containment and we initiated an investigation. Our investigation shows the sheen material is an aged diesel fuel (or fuel oil) that appears to be isolated in an area along the south side of Sand Creek where the original sheen was observed.

Later this week, we will start the following activities to mitigate impacts to this portion of the creek:

  • a minor diversion of Sand Creek and further containment of the area
  • partial dewatering of the containment area, as needed
  • removing impacted soil and sediment
  • backfilling the impacted area
  • restoring the area to its original condition

We are working with the appropriate regulatory agencies and are keeping them updated on the situation. We expect this work to continue through to the end of July and we will notify the community once the work is complete.

If you have questions or concerns, please contact commercecityrefinery@suncor.com.
