About Commerce City
As the state’s fourth-fastest growing community, Commerce City is redefining itself for the next generation, building on historic values of community, industry, agriculture, and family. The city covers 41 square miles and is expected to grow to a 64-square-mile area during the next 20 years.
Population
In the last decade, the city’s population has more than doubled, but the city has maintained its small town atmosphere. According to the
2010 Census data, more than 45,913 people call Commerce City home, with individuals of Hispanic descent comprising 47% of the city’s population. The average age of residents is 34.5, with an average household income of $65,944. More than 65% of residents are homeowners, with a median home price of $205,000.
Home Rule
Commerce City became a home-rule municipality in 1970, which means the
city council may determine local laws within the city limits. Our city operates under a council-manager form of government, in which the city council sets the
city vision and approves the budget, while the
city manager serves as the chief executive officer for the organization. The laws (ordinances) that govern citizen conduct are contained in the city's
Revised Municipal Code.
Sales & Property Tax
The city’s sales tax rate is 8.25%, broken out as follows:
- Commerce City 3.50%
- Adams County 0.75%
- Scientific Cultural and Facilities District 0.10%
- Regional Transportation District 1.00%
- State of Colorado 2.90%
Everyone in Commerce City pays the same property tax rate (3.28 mills). But your total property tax bill amount depends upon where a property is located. This is because other entities such as schools and metro districts also collect property taxes to provide their services.

Honoring Veterans
Commerce City supports local military families as a member of the Silver Star Families of America. The city is honored to fly the Silver Star flag, a shining symbol for sacrifice, honoring the combat wounded, ill and dying members of America's armed forces, and bringing remembrance to those deserving of our thanks.
