Do I Need a Permit?
Building Permits
Please note that the following is not a complete list. Building permits may be required for other projects not listed here. If you are unsure whether your project requires a building permit, please check with the Building Safety Division at 303-289-3790 prior to beginning work to verify whether a permit is required for your specific project.

Building permits are required for the following projects:
  • Accessory structures and buildings
  • Air conditioners, not including corded window unit air conditioners
  • Basement finishes
  • Boilers
  • Carports
  • Cell towers, including adding equipment to existing towers
  • Children’s playhouses
  • Compressed natural gas systems
  • Concrete projects, such as sidewalk slabs for patios, hot tubs, etc.
  • Construction trailers
  • Decks
  • Demolition, in whole or in part
  • Driveways
  • Electrical, including new construction and alterations to existing construction
  • Electrical service, including upgrades and replacements
  • Exterior stairways
  • Fences
  • Fireplaces, including solid fuel, gas, etc.
  • Fuel cells
  • Furnaces
  • Garages, including new structures and additions, both attached and detached
  • Gas log inserts
  • Gas log lighters
  • Gas piping
  • Gas stoves
  • Gazebos
  • Heat pumps
  • Hot tubs (only those over 24 inches deep)
    • Electrical work requires a permit regardless of depth
  • Interior and exterior alterations, repairs, renovations, remodeling and additions to existing residential and non-residential buildings and structures
  • Lawn sprinklers and backflow devices
  • Manufactured homes 
  • Mobile homes 
  • Mobile office and sales trailers 
  • Modular homes and buildings 
  • Moved buildings 
  • New construction of residential and non-residential buildings and structures
  • Patio enclosures or covers 
  • Plumbing, including new construction and alterations to existing construction
  • Porch additions or enclosures 
  • Retaining walls (only those over four feet unless supporting a surcharge)
  • Roofing 
  • Sewer service lines, including new construction, repairs and replacement
  • Sheds 
  • Siding, including replacement and overlays
  • Signs 
  • Solar / photovoltaic systems 
  • Spas (only those over 24 inches deep)
  • Structural repairs and alterations 
  • Stucco, including hard coat and synthetic
  • Swamp coolers 
  • Swimming pools (only those over 24 inches deep)
  • Towers 
  • Water heaters 
  • Water service lines, including new construction, repairs and replacement
  • Water softeners 
  • Window replacements 
  • Wood stoves
