Elections
Commerce City municipal elections are conducted every two years, in odd-numbered years, on the first Tuesday in November. Both the mayor and councilors are elected to four-year terms. Terms of office begin while taking the oath of office at the organizational meeting held on the second Monday following certification of the election. 

The next municipal election will be held on November 5, 2013.

  • Aug. 6: Nomination petition for council candidates are available for pickup. Petitions may be circulated and signed. C.R.S. 1-4-805 (91 days before the election)
  • Aug. 7: Campaign signs allowed. Land Development Code Section 21-8240 (90 days before the election)
  • Aug. 26: Last day to file signed nomination petitions with the city clerk’s office. C.R.S. 1-4-805 (71 days before the election)
  • Aug. 27: IGA must be signed by both the city and the county and in the possession of Adams County. C.R.S. 1-7-116(2) (70 days before the election)
  • Aug. 30: Last day to cure insufficient nomination petitions. C.R.S. 1-4-805 (before the 67th day before the election)
  • Sept. 3: Last day to file an affidavit of intent to run as a write-in candidate for a non-partisan coordinated election. C.R.S. 1-4-1102(2) (64 days before the election) The 64th day is a legal holiday
  • Sept. 6: Last day to certify ballot content to Adams County Clerk. C.R.S. 1-5-203(3)(a) (60 days before the election)
  • Sept. 20: Last day to file pro/con comments pertaining to Commerce City ballot issues (TABOR) with the city clerk’s office to be included in the ballot issue notice. Article X, Sect. 20(3)(b)(v), C.R.S. 1-7-901(4) (45 days before the election) (45th day is Saturday the 17th)
  • Sept. 23: Last day for a petition representative (initiated TABOR measures) to submit a summary of comments in favor of their local ballot issue (TABOR). C.R.S. 1-7-903(3) (43 days before the election)
  • Sept. 24: Last day to deliver ballot issue (TABOR) notices (hard copy and disc) to the Adams County Clerk. C.R.S. 1-7-904 (42 days before the election)
  • Oct. 4: Last day to mail statewide ballot measure booklet and ballot issue (TABOR) notices. Art. X, Sec. 20(3)(b); C.R.S. 1-1-106(5); Art. V, Sec 1(7.5)(b); C.R.S. 1-40-124.5; C.R.S. 1-1-106(5) (30 days before the election)
  • Oct 7: Last day to register to vote for the Coordinated Election. C.R.S. 1-2-201(3) (29 days before the election)
  • Oct. 15: Contributions and expenditures report due for reporting period ending Oct. 10, 2013. C.R.S. 1-45-108(2)(a)(II);
  • Oct. 15 – Oct. 18: Mail ballots sent to eligible electors. C.R.S. 1-7.5-107(3)(a); C.R.S. 1-7.5 108.5(2) (no sooner than 22 days and no later than 18 days before the election)
  • Oct. 15 – Nov. 5: Mail ballots available at the Adams County Elections Office for eligible electors listed as inactive. C.R.S. 1-7.5-107(3)(c) (no sooner than 22 days before the election and no later than 7 p.m. on election day)
  • Oct. 29: Last day to apply for a mail-in ballot for the coordinated election if mailed. C.R.S. 1-8-104(3) (7 days before the election)
  • Nov. 1: Contributions and expenditures report due for reporting period beginning Oct. 11, 2013, and ending Oct. 27, 2013. C.R.S. 1-45-108(2)(a)(II)
  • Nov. 1: Last day to apply for a mail-in ballot for the coordinated election if the ballot is picked up in person. C.R.S. 1-8-104(3) (Friday before the election)
  • Nov. 5: ELECTION DAY
  • Nov. 19: Campaign signs must be removed. Land Development Code Section 21-8240 (14 days after election)
  • Nov. 22: County Board of Canvassers shall prepare official abstract of votes cast. C.R.S. 1-10-102(1) (17 days after the election)
  • Nov. 29: Last day an interested party may request a recount at their own expense. The request shall be filed with the appropriate governing body. C.R.S. 1-10.5-106(2) (within 24 days after the election, to be completed no later than 30 days after the election)
  • Dec. 5: Post-election contributions and expenditures report due for reporting period beginning Oct. 28, 2013, and ending Nov. 30, 2013. C.R.S. 1-45-108(2)(a)(II)
