Safety & Prevention
Lock It or Lose It
Lock it or Lose it is the police department's public education campaign to reduce auto theft in the city. According to the Colorado State Patrol, 50 percent of stolen cars have the keys
in them, meaning the simple act of removing keys from your vehicle cuts your risk for auto theft in half. Leaving vehicles unattended and running – which is against the law in the state of Colorado – is a crime at least 40 percent of Colorado drivers admit they’ve done.
Here are some tips to avoid being a target this holiday season:
Never leave your car running unattended, even for a minute.
Holiday shopping? Put gifts and all valuables in the trunk or hidden from view.
Park in well-lit, high-traffic areas.
Never leave any keys in the car.
Always lock your car.
Be aware of your surroundings and report suspicious behavior.
Coloradans Against Auto Theft
The city actively participates in Coloradans Against Auto Theft, a coalition of law enforcement agencies, the Coloraod State Patrol, insurance partners, LoJack and AAA Colorado. Learn more about how to prevent your vehicle from being a target, visit
Teen-Parent Driving Contract
Another proactive education tool we provide is the Teen-Parent Driving Contract. This is a useful tool for parents to establish ground rules for their teen driver. The contract clearly identifies the rules and consequences for unsafe driving behavior, and it helps teen drivers become responsible, safe drivers.
