COMMERCE CITY, COLO. (June 12, 2012) – With summer in full swing, did your weekend to-do list get a bit bigger? Residents can get a head start on small home improvement projects through the Building Safety Division’s Weekend Warrior program. Every Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the division conducts same-day, over-the-counter reviews of small home improvement projects that require permits.

Projects covered under the program include: hot tubs, carports, gas fireplaces, fences, basement finishes, gas barbecues and fire pits, window/door replacements, decks (attached/detached), sheds, concrete projects, covered patios, and children’s playhouses. No appointment is necessary.

“Our goal is to make the permitting process as easy as possible and to assist homeowners in making the improvements they have been thinking about through the winter,” said Commerce City Building Official Patrick Buckley. “Oftentimes, these projects add value to your home, neighborhood, and community so we encourage all residents to take advantage of the program.”

Last year, the city issued more than 180 small home improvement permits through the Weekend Warrior program. Projects larger than 200 square feet are not eligible unless covering patios or decks. These projects are subject to the city’s normal 4-to 15-day review process. Applicants must be present and verify the project meets any HOA requirements before submitting plans.
