I had the distinct pleasure of participating for the third year in a row in the annual Metro Denver Economic Development Corporation’s Site Selection Conference. 2010 Incentives Program ends this month - The primary goal of the program was to positively impact all facets of the Commerce City economy through job creation; investment in the community by home owners, home builders and new and existing businesses; and new housing, business and office development. Celebrating Business Success! - This month Republic Services held the grand opening of their CNG station and City Council is recognizing Commerce City businesses that have been honored: Alpine Waste & Recycling, Atlas Copco, Birko Corporation, Douglass Colony Group, Goldylocks Balloons, Houg Special Services Inc and Schlumberger.

Republic Services
September 22, Republic Services of Denver held the grand opening of their Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) station at their facility in Commerce City. Nationally, Republic operates the sixth largest waste removal hauler fleet is transitioning its fleet of trucks, both in Commerce City and across the nation, from diesel to CNG. For Republic, “Being ‘green’ is not just a philosophy at Republic Services, Inc. From landfills to state-of-the-art recycling facilities—the company has been dedicated to this great planet from the beginning.” The Republic Services offices and the CNG facility are located at 5075 E 74th Ave.

Business Recognition

This month, City Council is recognizing a number of Commerce City businesses for the honors they have received from various organizations. These companies are: Atlas Copco, Birko Corporation, Douglass Colony Group, Goldylocks Balloons, Houg Special Services Inc and Schlumberger

The World’s Most Innovative Companies – Forbes Magazine

The Innovation level of a company was measured by Forbes Magazine based on how much investors have bid up the stock price of a company above the value of its existing business based on expectations of future innovative results (new products, services and markets). Two companies with Commerce City operations received this designation:

Atlas Copco
This international company has provided industrial productivity solutions for more than a century. Atlas Copco Construction Mining Technique (CMT) USA is headquartered in Commerce City at 3700 E 68th Ave and has been in operation since 1984. The sales and service facility was opened at 10525 Havana Ct earlier this year. These facilities serve the Rocky Mountain Region and are responsible for the sales, aftersales service and rental of equipment for: surface and underground rock excavation, exploration drilling, rock reinforcement, ground engineering, water well and oil & gas drilling.

Located at 4915 Niagara St, this wholesale distributor of balloons and accessories has experienced rapid growth during their 6 years of operation. The business is owned by Sarah Valdez Martinez who employs 20 people. Goldylocks is ranked 45 of the Top 50 Minority-Owned Businesses.

Houg Special Services
The company, owned by Jenyce Houg, is a 100% woman-owned business and family operated and managed for the past 25 years. The founder, Doug Houg, instilled in his children, Jenyce Houg and Wade Houg, that "Never Saying No" to customers is the only way to be successful in any business. Therefore, the Houg Family and Team take great pride in providing the highest level of service to all customers through providing a solution for ANY needs their customers require. This growing transportation and logistics company has done business in Commerce City for 13 years. Houg has 100 employees and is located at 5333 E 58th Ave. This year Houg ranked 6 on the list of the Top 100 Woman-Owned Companies, and was also recognized as one of the Top 250 Private Companies (see below).

Top Company Finalist - ColoradoBiz Magazine

Now in its 24th year, the Top Company program recognizes outstanding firms headquartered in Colorado or with a significant presence here, based on three factors: financial performance, community involvement and outstanding achievement, such as marketing innovation, product innovation or operational efficiency. Finalists are selected from a rigorous evaluation and selection process. The Top Company competition is widely considered to be "Colorado's most competitive business award."

Birko Corp
This Top Company is celebrating almost 60 years of service to the food safety industry. The company is headquartered in Commerce City at 9152 Yosemite St and manufactures more than 250 cleaning, sanitation and production process chemicals as well as solutions used in antimicrobial interventions. Many Birko formulations are on the USDA NOP (National Organic Program) list of allowed products for use by organic processors, and many others are registered with the EPA as environmentally friendly or “environmentally neutral.” The company has 60 employees and was also recognized as one of the Top 250 Private Companies (see below).

Saturday, October 22
Free day at Landfill for Commerce City Residents

Take out the trash for free on Saturday, Oct. 22 from 7 a.m.-3 p.m.! Proof of city residency is required (Colo. driver's license/tax statement) and all visitor to the landfill must wear reflective safety vest while unloading -- bring your own or purchase for $1. No charge for trash hauled in cars, pickup trucks or pickup--size trailers (5 cubic yds). Appliances with refrigerants (air conditioners, refrigerators, etc.) must have certification of chlorofluorocarbon removal. Tires, car batteries, used oil and hazardous materials/liquid will not be accepted. For additional information, call 303-371-2887. The landfill is located on 8480 Tower Road.

2010 Incentive Program summary presentation to City Council
A summary of the 2010 Incentive Program and recommendations for an ongoing incentive program will be discussed at City Council on Monday, October 24. City Council meetings are held at the Commerce City Civic Center, 7887 E 60th Ave and begin at 6:30 p.m. Current incentive program guidelines may be significantly changed and/or eliminated with the adoption of the new program.

Application deadline for the 2010 Incentive Program!

Incentive application for the 2010 Incentive Program must be received at the Civic Center, 7887 E 60th Ave., by the 5:00 p.m. close of business, or be postmarked that day. Late incentive applications will not be accepted. Incentive applications and additional information may be obtained from the City’s website using the link below.   Incentives information 

Saturday & Sunday, November 5 & 6
Volunteer at Commerce City's Family 9Health Fair

Commerce City is hosting its second Family 9Health Fair on Saturday, Nov. 5 and Sunday, Nov. 6, from 7 a.m. – noon each day at Adams City High School. The 9Health Fair provides free and low-cost screenings to metro Denver residents. Last year’s Commerce City event was one of the largest health fairs the organization held. The event fills a tremendous need for our residents as well as those throughout the north metro area.

Volunteers are not required to have a health background. Volunteers are needed on Nov. 5 and 6 from 6 a.m. – 1 p.m. on both days. Even a few hours of your time would be appreciated. Use the link below to learn more about volunteering for this event.

The International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) Alliance is a partnership of public and private retail development/redevelopment experts. This event will be a panel presentation of Urban Renewal experts to discuss this hot topic in our city: 
  • How it relates to us here in Commerce City 
  • What are some realistic expectations for the dog track development 
  • Lessons learned from other URA developments 
  • What potential challenges/processes we may face here in Commerce City 
  • Economic impact on communities 
  • And more….
Invited attendees include the City Council, all City staff, City Boards & Commissions, Commerce City businesses, stakeholders and residents.  Watch for more information in November!

Fun Facts 

Did you know some of the first roads to be built in the area were Irondale Road, now known as 88th Avenue, and Model Road, known today as 64th Avenue?  

Both of these roads went through Commerce City and extended east to where Denver International Airport is located. These roads were closed off when the Rocky Mountain Arsenal came into existence.
